Hi Benjamin, what I’m trying to say in this blog post is that I’m not too fond of how the representation of violence and suffering is done in this, well, advertisement. I mean the specific context of one conflict in one African country (comments in your blog have mentioned this problem).
Of course, it’s not a news item that comes along with facts (exact time, date, names of people and political groups involved etc.). But if you as the maker of this video do away with the context you get the picture of a whole continent characterized by what Joseph Conrad’s Kurtz said: „The horror, the horror“.
The Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina refers to this in his mock-advise „How to write about Africa“. What he writes in this article is so true.
